Specific Pain of Being Used by Someone You Trusted

The trust, care, and belief that this person was on your side was real, and then you realized they were using the trust to take something from you. They were taking your time, energy, vulnerability, or something else and they weren’t giving anything back. The trust you placed in them was a tool they used to access things you wouldn’t have given if you’d known what they were planning.

The specific pain of this is different from being used by someone you didn’t trust. This hurts more because the trust made you vulnerable. The trust made you open. The trust made you believe that someone had your best interests in mind when really they had their own interests. The vulnerability that came from trust is what they exploited.

You are replaying conversations trying to figure out when it started. When did they stop being genuine and start being manipulative? When did the relationship become one-directional? When did you start giving more than you were receiving? But the answers don’t matter because the betrayal is already complete. The using already happened. The knowledge that this person was using you can’t be unknown.

What’s hard is that they probably weren’t always using you. They probably genuinely cared at first, but something shifted or they decided they wanted something more than they wanted the relationship, or they decided that taking what they could get was more important than respecting the person giving it to them. The friendship or relationship died but it took your trust with it.

Now you are different around people. You are more suspicious. You are more guarded. You are checking motivations that you used to take at face value. The person who used you didn’t just hurt you, they changed how you relate to people. They made trust harder. They made vulnerability feel dangerous. They made you question whether anyone is really on your side.

Other relationships might suffer because of the betrayal. You might pull back from people who deserve trust because you are protecting yourself from future betrayals. You might be less open because you remember what happened when you were too open. The person who used you gets to live in your relationships going forward even after they’re gone.

The anger about this is legitimate. You have a right to be furious that someone took your trust and used it, to be devastated that someone you believed in turned out to be someone who didn’t believe in you, or a right to protect yourself differently now, but the protection costs you connection and the cost is high.

You could try to forgive, or give people another chance at trust, or you could try to believe that most people aren’t going to use you the way this person did, but the knowing that it happened once means knowing it could happen again. The used trust is hard to rebuild even with people who deserve it.
