Episode 2: Unlearning Urgency as a Metric for Worth
There was a time when urgency felt
like evidence that life was being lived correctly; a time when waking up to a
packed calendar, racing to respond, and stacking plans weeks in advance gave
the impression that purpose was being pursued with intention. The momentum felt
validating, and every hour filled became its own achievement.
But beneath the motion was something
less glamorous, something few wanted to name, an undercurrent of fear. Fear of
fading into irrelevance, fear that slowing down would create an opening for
doubt to creep in, and fear that rest would be mistaken for idleness. So the
pace continued, out of avoidance, because silence made room for questions that
had been long deferred.
The world celebrated it and
productivity was worshipped. The hustle was sanctified. Tiredness was worn like
a badge, and speed became the metric by which value was measured. The faster
you moved, the more valid you seemed. Until suddenly, the effort stopped
delivering the feeling it once promised. The same schedule that used to feel
empowering started to feel suffocating. The calendar stayed full, but the sense
of purpose began to vanish. The activities remained, but the meaning behind
them had thinned into something difficult to hold.
Walking away from that cycle is rarely
visible to others. No one offers acknowledgment when you start breathing more
deeply or when you begin saying no without explanation. At first, the slowing
feels like loss, not just of productivity, but of identity. It can feel like
wandering aimlessness, but over time, a different cadence emerges, one that
simply stays steady, sustainable, and increasingly more attuned to what
actually matters.
You begin to pay attention differently
to whether what you are doing feels aligned with who you are becoming. You ask
harder, more honest questions. You stop using pace as a stand-in for direction.
You begin to recognize that the urgency was never the same thing as purpose; it
only gave you something to chase when you weren’t sure what to trust.
Eventually, the belief that speed
equals significance begins to fade. You no longer equate rest with laziness.
You understand that pausing is not quitting; it is an act of preservation. You
learn that your energy is worth protecting, not just expending, and your value
is no longer tangled in what you achieve, but in how you show up for what
matters. What begins to grow in its place is far more enduring, a life
that expands from within because it is finally being built on something solid.
