Joy That Doesn’t Have to Be Earned

Every beginning looks ordinary until you realize you’re the one becoming extraordinary.

What if joy didn’t need to be earned? This piece explores how to trust happiness after pain, let go of guilt, and allow soft moments to matter, even when no one else sees them.

Somewhere along the way, you might’ve started believing that feeling good had to be earned, that rest needed a reason, that peace only belonged to those who had done enough, healed enough, and sacrificed enough.

So when joy does show up, it catches you off guard. You question it and hold your breath waiting for the catch. It’s easier to brace for the fall than to trust the lightness, bur joy isn’t a prize. It doesn’t show up because you’ve checked all the boxes.

It sneaks in on the days you almost deleted everything, it’s there in the quiet moments when no one needs anything from you, and it’s there when you laugh at something small, then stop yourself because maybe you forgot that joy doesn’t need a disclaimer.

You’ve learned to associate peace with performance. You’ve carried more than your fair share and called it strength. So when joy arrives without needing fixing, without a reason to prove anything, it feels foreign or uncomfortable, like something you haven’t earned, but stop waiting for someone else to tell you that you deserve to feel good.

Let it be enough that you’re here. Let it be enough that you’ve kept going even when no one was watching. Let it be enough that the work you’ve done, especially the work no one saw, matters on its own.

Some days you won’t know exactly what you’re healing from until joy touches it just enough to remind you that this part of life is yours too, yes, the unremarkable, beautiful parts that never asked for an explanation.

Even if nothing big happened today, or even if you didn’t check anything off or solve what’s still heavy, if something small felt good, let that be enough. You don’t owe it to anyone to stay in the struggle when joy shows up. You don’t need a full recovery to laugh again and you don’t need a finish line to feel peace.

If you are here, breathing and trying, that’s enough. The moment joy shows up without warning, let it, let it stay, and let it mean something.

May you trust where you're growing,

May you stay patient with what’s still taking shape,

May you keep choosing what makes you whole.

Thank you for walking this path with me. I can’t wait to see what you create from here.
